No one could blame you for being turned off by the term “mumblecore”, or the fact that the typical efforts in this burgeoning independent film genre focus shaky camcorders on hipster twenty-somethings in big cities improvising dialogue about the very important problems in their lives. But bear in mind that the zero-budget aesthetics of “mumblecore” lend itself to the oldest trick in the cheapie cinema book: young, fresh, female nakedness, and plenty of it. Case in point(s): the “mumblecore”/pseudo-horror hybrid Baghead (2008), which features Greta Gerwig, the true bust-out star of the movement, losing her top as easily as she did in her previous naked video triumph, Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007). In Baghead, a group of filmmakers settles into a spooky cabin to write a slasher-movie script centered on the masked murderer of the title, but once again it’s Greta’s gazongas that turn out to be absolutely killer.
