Bagdad Cafe

No Nudity

Review

A desert road from Vegas to nowhere… This series, derived from the small but consistently appreciated movie of the same name, changes tack slightly from the original but adds an element of comedy to the mix that had very few fans of the film complaining. Whoopi Goldberg stars as the owner/operator of the Bagdad Hotel and Café, Jean Stapleton (All in the Family) co-stars as an old woman dropped off on the side of the highway after an argument with her husband. Rather than call for help, she makes friends with Whoopi (whose husband just bailed too) and decides to stay on. A bizarre local artist (James Gammon) throws the occasional bout of flirtation her way and a variety of passing-through characters make for the entertainment. Surprisingly good stuff and an appearance by Monica Calhoun, who took it off for Trois 2: Pandora’s Box, will keep Skin fans well contented. The show only lasted a season and a bit but it was a fun ride.
