Karen Allen and Jeff Fahey are a wealthy young couple whose lives are haunted by the specter of the Vietnam War in Backfire (1987), Gilbert Cates's crafty suspense thriller. Jeff's been having some monstro nightmares about In Country spookery, full of artillery fire and roaring choppers and freaky, freaky screaming. His flashbacks get bad enough to cause a serious setback: a catatonic state! Jeff's sister, Dinah Manoff, keeps it a secret that he has filled out documents giving his wife the reins in any such mess—she wants to put Karen in her place (and keep her paramour Dean Paul Martin's paws off the family coffers). Unhappy Karen meets Keith Carradine in a bar, and it's not long before the drifter has moved into the mansion with her . . . and gotten mixed up in her devious scheming.
