Ausgerechnet Zoé (1994)

In the heartrending German melodrama Ausgerechnet Zoé (1994), a young woman tries to cope with the knowledge that she’s HIV positive. Nicolette Krebitz stars as Zoé, a twenty-two-year-old whose whole life changes when she learns of her illness. Shrugging off the sympathy she garners from her old friends, Zoé searches for a social circle that will accept her for the person she’s always been. Markus Imboden’s made-for-TV production is a three-hankie affair, but there are some alluring moments with the young Krebitz, whose melancholy appears to keep her from getting dressed in the morning.
