Kevin Kline is having a really bad year in Life as a House (2001). He’s just been fired from his job as an architect, and he’s also got a terminal illness that gives him about four months to live. Well, at least it’ll be a short year. He decides to dedicate himself to the building of his dream house, which he accomplishes while reconciling with his gothy teen son Hayden Christensen. Meanwhile, next door neighbor Mary Steenburgen livens up this moribund drama by getting it on with Hayden’s underage school pal.
