Vanity Fair (2004) was a bestseller when it was originally published in nineteenth-century England by William Makepeace Thackeray, and it’s only better on the big screen today thanks to the alluring charms of its star, Reese Witherspoon. She plays the social climber who works her way up from an impoverished youth to the highest social setting. Viewers will get worked up too, watching the beautiful blonde prance around in Victorian, body-squeezing garments. But the real scene stealer here is Eileen Atkins as Miss Matilda Crawley. Her bare-bottomed bath scene is the kind of nourishment that makes the Atkins Diet so attractive.
