Alain Delon leads a talented cast in Valerio Zurlini's forgotten Italian masterpiece La Prima notte di quiete (1972). Delon plays a hard-drinking high-school teacher who arrives in the slumbering coastal resort town of Rimini with a chip on his shoulder. Plagued by a melancholy wife and a desire to tap into the swingin' ’70s zeitgeist, the despairing protagonist decides to pursue an extramarital affair with a sullen, angelic student (Sonia Petrovna). Zurlini borrows locations from Federico Fellini and gloomy atmosphere from Michelangelo Antonioni, but the end result is uniquely his own. Petrovna helps matters considerably with her sultry scenes of carnal embrace with ridiculously lucky Delon.
