For all you wayward angels out there: You can, of course, go home again, but don't expect everybody you left behind to fall all over one another to kiss your ass and welcome you back. Such is the two-sided, bittersweet triumph of a formerly abused wife who, in Cavedweller (2004), returns to the scene of the crime after many years of a new life. Those two daughters she left behind? Their grandmother? None of these women are eager to congratulate the self-righteous and proud survivor for having escaped a fate that is just everyday life to the people who go about day by day living it. Somewhere between dramatically raised expectations and the resultant bruised feelings of a rough landing with the family of origin lies a real-life middle ground of emotional, shared-blood love.
