Armchair biologists are fond of astounding impressionable lads with the information that the female is the deadlier gender of many species, a fact fatale that crosses over to the human race with fascinating and arousing consequences in The Praying Mantis (2003). An otherworldly Old World blend of the supernatural, sex, and suspense, this beguiling Belgian flick opens with a regular-enough guy encountering an attractive, acceptably strange woman upon the side of a road and taking her home with him. Our hero’s slightly risqué course of action leads him into a fateful reality that is carnal, kaleidoscopic, and inescapable.
