Best known for his paeans to mall rats and cash register jockeys, indie director Kevin Smith heads in a significantly more sentimental direction in Jersey Girl (2004). The tabloids went wild upon learning that Hollywood hot item Bennifer (Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez) were starring in Smith’s long-nurtured pet project about an NYC music executive who marries his sweetheart before watching his professional life go off the rails. Forced back to Jersey, Ollie (Affleck) holes up with his gruff old man (George Carlin) in a bid to resist the call of fatherhood. Liv Tyler shows up as a very convincing argument for staying in New Jersey. New York never had a chance.
