Bad family dynamics are so commonplace and extensive that therapy has become one of America’s primary growth industries, but no amount of high-dollar counseling will mend the father-child relationships torn asunder by Fate (2003). A grizzled homicide dick draws a serial-killer case. With each new victim, the emotional fallout becomes more eerie to the somber detective. The circumstances of the slayings resonate within him, striking instinctual chords. Each of the victims had been adopted as a child. The cop himself had been given up by his birth parents. The similarities between the detective and the deceased, the detective senses, go deeper, to the very genetic code of his existence. If only he had a father’s hand to guide him.
