Review

An L.A. lawyer resolves to turn on, tune in, and drop out in the sweet-natured counterculture comedy I Love You, Alice B. Toklas! (1968). Peter Sellers stars as Harold Fine, an impossibly square litigator who grows weary of the conformity and hypocrisy of modern life. The thirty-something decides that the quickest method of escape is to pursue a love affair with a gorgeous and free-spirited hippie (Leigh Taylor-Young) but discovers that bellbottoms and pot brownies can only take you so far. For a flick about the high tide of rebellion, Hy Averback’s comedy plays it pretty conservatively with the clothing. Taylor-Young treats audiences to a flash of nip, but you’ve got to be pretty on-guard to catch it.
