Fresh from directing his breakthrough feature M*A*S*H (1970), iconic director Robert Altman lensed McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), a relentlessly inventive western and one of the great American films of its decade. Warren Beatty stars as the titular McCabe in a sweeping tale about a skilled cardsharp who dreams of opening a brothel in a rugged frontier town. Julie Christie plays a hooker with a heart of gold who throws her weight behind McCabe’s ambitious venture until greed, jealousy, and bad vibes ultimately end the all-American experiment. Maysie Hoy and Linda Sorenson add some period décor to the proceedings as Wild West prostitutes out to entertain prospectors with their womanly charms.
