The 1970s were a volatile era in the United Kingdom. The optimism of the 1960s had given way to a stilted economy and cultural ennui. Unemployed yobs were rioting in the country lanes and upon the village greens, and the only ray of sunshine was disaffected youths singing of anarchy. On an individual level, even a duly ordained minion of the good lord, such as the emotion-fueled protagonist of Passion of the Priest (1998), was eligible for having his entire world turned upside down. Take the topsy-turvy spill as a Catholic priest betrays his vows, renounces his chastity, and finds that God and the opposition have made strange and obsessed bedmates in the seedy underworld of a society in flux.
