Writer-director Tim Burton’s visionary fantasy Edward Scissorhands (1990) casts Johnny Depp as the titular misfit. He’s a robot with long blades for fingers whose creator (Vincent Price) died before perfecting the creation’s hands. A suburban real-estate agent (Dianne Wiest) discovers Edward alone in his castle and invites him to move in with her family. He promptly falls in love with Wiest’s beautiful daughter (Winona Ryder), falls prey to a local bully (Anthony Michael Hall), and becomes all the rage as a uniquely talented hairdresser and topiary gardener. Alas, the powers of conformity dictate that Edward is destined to be alone and, by the final shot, the Italian barbers on that episode of Seinfeld won’t be the only ones proclaiming: “Johnny Depp—he make-a me cry!”
