A modern rehashing of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), the quirky indie comedy A Wake in Providence (1999) adds a few new wrinkles to the culture-clash template. Vincent Pagano stars as Anthony, the prodigal son of an ultra-traditional and most unusual Italian family. When Anthony’s summoned home for his grandfather’s funeral, he decides, against his better judgment, to ask his beautiful African-American girlfriend (Victoria Rowell) to accompany him. Alissa (Rowell) steels herself for a potentially bumpy weekend but quickly discovers that things at Anthony’s house are quite a bit more dysfunctional than she imagined. Rowell manages to look impossibly sexy through every minute of the awkward homecoming, while co-star Leigh Allyn Baker chimes in with a revealing performance of her own.
