Bad-boy auteur Abel Ferrara reimagines the Robin Hood legend in a Big Apple milieu in the vicious crime thriller King of New York (1990). The great Christopher Walken sinks his teeth into the role of Frank White, a no-nonsense drug lord who’s been hardened by his stint behind bars. Returning to his New York stomping grounds, White elects to eliminate the competition by making the sewers run with their blood. And because he’s a nice guy, he figures he’ll divvy up the profits to the poor while he’s at it. Relentlessly hard-edged and violent, Ferrara’s flick also boasts one of the best ensemble casts imaginable, with David Caruso, Laurence Fishburne, Steve Buscemi, and others making appearances. Theresa Randle finds some room to shine, but it’s Janet Julian who really dazzles by letting Walken walk his palms all over her heaving breasts.
