The world of high fashion is often viewed as a snooty, rarefied realm of pomp and very little circumstance, a silly and empty universe populated by self-important but ultimately pointless celebrities whose entire existence is geared toward surface appearances. Don’t expect director Robert Altman’s Ready to Wear (1994) to alter any such preconception. An arch, comic and almost cruel dissection of the business of appearances, Ready to Wear exposes no shortage of institutionalized fraud and absurdity. Also exposed is no shortage of nudity, much of it of the incidental and fleeting variety, but with a big bang of bareness at the end.
