Michael Douglas is a mentally muddy musician who's just been sprung from the psych ward in King of California (2007), Michael Cahill's quirksville charmer about a man, his kid, and his kooky quest. Mike is something of a deadbeat, having handed all of life's responsibilities to daughter Evan Rachel Wood. She pays the bills, handles the household, and lives a life far more complex than the typical fifteen-year-old. Now dad is mad on the trail of buried treasure—he thinks there's a stash of Spanish gold hidden beneath the local Costco—and Evan has to tag along, reconnecting with her old man in the process. Hollywood's king of offbeat suburban angst, Alexander Payne, served as a producer of King of California, so it's sure to please fans of Payne-fully bittersweet indie treats.
