Polish auteur Walerian Borowczyk lived in Warsaw as that city's glories were diminished by occupying Nazis and stultifying Communists, a witnessing that imbued him with a unique perspective upon historical infamy. In Immoral Tales (1974), Borowczyk presents four vignettes that illustrate a selection of the most nefarious sexual misdeeds in the annals of Europe. The Pope’s daughter bears his child. A depraved countess bathes in the blood of slain damsels. A pair of kissing cousins experiments with deep-throating excesses. A maiden and a cucumber reach orgasmic heights. All of this intense sexuality is presented with a painter’s eye to detail and composition. The only thing more apparent and impressive than the director’s obsessive genius is the vast pool of awe-inspiring skin on display.
