Set amid the political turmoil that rocked West Germany in the 1970s, Margarethe von Trotta’s lyrical art film Die Bleierne Zeit (1981) explores the paths that two intelligent, upper-class sisters choose for themselves. Juliane (Jutta Lampe) is the successful editor of a respected leftist magazine, while her radical terrorist sister, Marianne (Barbara Sukowa), airs her grievances through more direct forms of engagement. Things don’t end well for Marianne--the activist is jailed for her aggressions--but her imprisonment offers a fine opportunity to scope both women in the buff as they swap sweaters during a jailhouse switcheroo.
