Two directors, one male and one female, labor to capture the battle of the sexes from both sides of the gendered divide in He Said, She Said (1991). Comprised of two dueling segments, the film chronicles the rivalry, flirtation, and love affair between a pair of journalists, played by Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Perkins. Though the former’s a conservatively minded journeyman reporter and the latter’s a socially conscious, degree-toting journalist, their proximity in the newsroom causes sparks to fly. Co-directors Marisa Silver and Ken Kwapis work to keep their romantic comedy gender neutral, but there’s arguably more for the males here, as Perkins and co-star Ashley Gardner both get into their roles by getting out of their clothes.
