Anyone who has ever lost a loved one to midair disaster or lost his luggage on an O’Hare conveyor knows that travel by commercial flight is no joking matter, but you’d never realize that by watching Airplane! (1980). Created by a trio of sacrilegious yuck hucksters who never met a double entendre that they could pass up, this send-up of airport disaster flicks spews a steady stream of puns, sight gags, recurring shtick, and gratuitous absurdity that through sheer quantity of quips achieves levity liftoff and is every snicker as funny in this day of air marshals and don’t fly lists as it was in the innocent year of its ridiculous and riotous birth.
