Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas are the royalty in question in The Mambo Kings (1992), a florid and romantic riff on Oscar Hijuelos’s prize-winning novel. Propelled by brassy Latin rhythms and sashaying dames (including naked knockouts Marushcka Detmers and Valerie McIntosh), the fast-paced film tells the story of two Cuban brothers who leave Havana’s jazz clubs for the bright lights of New York and end up working their way up from neighborhood butchers to popular entertainers. Sexy blonde starlet Cathy Moriarty never peels off her clothes, but she’s scintillating in her alluring supporting performance.
