See them gliding through the air with the greatest of ease, the blood-sucking freaks on the flying trapeze! Vampire Circus (1972) may raise expectations of morbidly gaunt men who have donned fake red noses and tufts of brilliant crimson hair to distract from their telltale fangs. The reality is a more dour but no less rewarding type of entertainment. Vampire Circus is a stylized, creepy period piece that follows a troupe of weird performers who arrive at a Serbian village and bring along with them a foreboding plague that necessitates the hamlet being quarantined from the outside world. The spooky acrobats and fire eaters are now free to gruesomely slaughter the townsfolk, picked off one by one in revenge for the lynching of an ancestral count 100 years before. But the townsfolk bite back.
