As more and more of the gray-collar workforce spends their career time staring into computer screens, hooked in with a network of similarly yoked techno-serfs, movies with the dystopian theme of technology run amok, such as the evocative and dreamily dreary Paranoia 1.0 (2004), gain in impact and relevance. This sly and captivating foray into a future that is not far from our present follows the disintegration of a computer programmer who has been snared by a corporate-driven plot to ensure consumer control. Or perhaps he has inexplicably fallen into the interior of an elaborate and chilling video game. Then again, intelligent, sensitive, and perceptive--qualities shared with Paranoia 1.0--the hero may simply be going insane, trapped in a world that has no place for an individual who resists being fitted into the matrix.
