Horror maven Wes Craven’s 1996 half-parody of the teen slasher movie, Scream, revived the genre and led to two sequels and to a new generation of horror franchises like I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) and Urban Legend (1998). In the film, a mysterious masked killer is stalking and killing high-school students using methods and rules derived from horror films of the ’70s and ’80s. In a nod to the paradigmatic Psycho (1960), Craven kills off his biggest star, Drew Barrymore, at the beginning of the film and, obeying the rules laid down by Carol Clove for the “Final Girl,” has as the film’s heroine Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), a virgin with a gender-ambiguous name. Unfortunately he ignores the rules about nudity, so female co-stars Courteney Cox and Rose McGowan keep their clothes on. It’s enough to make anyone scream.
