The Scottish may not be thought of as a light-humored bunch of people, but no one can fault them for perseverance in the pursuit of intoxicated mayhem and making the best out of a grim situation. When a comely wee lass living in a remote, cold-ass, dead-end town returns home from her partying rounds to find that her boyfriend has just committed suicide, she sheds a tear or two then does what a brave gal needs to do. In Morvern Callar (2002), a Lynne Ramsay-directed adaptation of a novel by Alan Warner, that means the bold girl cleans out her dead beau’s bank account, mails the manuscript of his recently completed magnum opus off to a publisher with her own name as author, and sets out for booze-soaked adventure upon the sunny isle of Ibiza. Moody and surreal intoxicated mayhem follows her everywhere she goes.
