Acclaimed filmmaker Michael Almereyda explores the intricacies of human desire in the stylish, low-budget horror drama The Eternal: Kiss of the Mummy (1998). Alison Elliott and Jared Harris star as a moody, alcohol-dependent couple who’ve retreated to an Irish cottage with their young son. As the husband becomes prone to increasingly bizarre and dangerous blackouts, his wife wonders if the presence of a mummified corpse in their basement might conceivably be connected. Witty and eerie, Almereyda’s chiller also boasts strains of eroticism, thanks largely to Elliott’s scantily clad presence.
