A dry debate over whether to grant autonomy to a tiny Spanish mountain town explodes into a contest of wit and will in the lively comedy Los Autonómicos (1982). The trouble begins when a hotheaded mayor, deciding that his rural hamlet is exceptional, proposes that it secede from the country at large. A blustering senator immediately vetoes the arrangement, and soon the politicos are engaged in a tooth-and-nail scrabble. Antonio Ozores and Juanito Navarro star as the rivals, while Iberian knockout María José Nieto appears as the tawdry pawn in their game. Along with co-star Beatriz Escudero, the actress peels off her tight-fitting garb to bring the men to their senses.
