Based on a scathing pre-war German novel, Nach Mitternacht (1981) satirizes social climbers who grapple for power while the threat of Totalitarianism looms ominously in the background. Beautiful Désirée Nosbusch stars as Sanne, an orphaned teenager who moves to Frankfurt to live with her cruel aunt. In the urbane German city, Sanne navigates her way through a maze of bawdy cabarets and political demonstrations that foreshadow the rise of Hitler. Director Wolf Gremm captures the glitter and opulence that characterized bourgeois life in pre-war Germany, enlisting Nosbusch and co-stars Marion Kracht and Krista Stadler to help communicate the loose sexual mores of the era.
