Although he’s most famous for his outrageously violent 1960s westerns, “Bloody” Sam Peckinpah lensed a number of other films over the course of his prolific career. Convoy (1978) is an atypical Peckinpah action thriller, based on a tune by C.W. McCall. Country star Kris Kristofferson plays Martin “Rubber Duck” Penwald, a long-haul trucker on the run from an evil cop played by Ernest Borgnine. There’s plenty of burned rubber and hot asphalt to go around, but the real draw is a fleshy flash from sexy hitcher Cassie Yates. ‘70s fixture Ali MacGraw also figures prominently in this sixteen-wheeler opus, although she keeps it relatively modest throughout.
