Miss Firecracker (1989) is a blast of down-home, feel-good times. Starring the high-explosive Holly Hunter as the town slut whose goal in life is to achieve the crown in the local beauty contest, hence the movie’s title, the movie should have more of a ribald feel than it does. Besides seeing Holly’s jollies in underwear, there’s no nudity here. But former Miss Firecracker Mary Steenburgen, who tries to undermine Holly’s ambition, makes for some eye candy that makes this sweet tale go down like a spoonful of sugar.
