When a properly motivated girl gets an idea into her head, nothing can stop her from achieving her dream, especially if the prize that she eyes is a vision of vengeance. Any doubters of the feminine resolve will have their qualms erased with a single viewing of Alley Cat (1982). Director Edward Victor has given the gentler gender both an exercise in riot grrrl empowerment and a particularly vicious revenge drama. A pretty, fragile-looking, sweet face is attacked by a crude and style-challenged gang of street toughs, and the cops don’t do doody squat to apprehend the louts. Does Alley Cat’s heroine pout and join a victims’ support group? Or does she undertake a crash course in killer martial arts and exact her bloody payback?
