A single mother’s dire financial straits force her to pimp her daughter for cash in the hard-edged Jamaican melodrama Dancehall Queen (1997). Terrorized by a neighborhood menace and manipulated by a wealthy patron, harried street vendor Marcia (Audrey Reid) agrees to let the latter have his way with her underage angel. Marcia fights back, however, by entering a dancehall contest and using her sexual currency to pit both antagonists against each other. Reid sizzles on screen both in and out of her get-up, and the little-known Patrice Harrison will make you wonder why she never became a star.
