It's hard to conceive of it today, but there was a time when poets were accorded all the perquisites of the modern-day rock star. In fact, rhymesters of the gilded ages were beings of such exalted esteem that it takes a suave and pretty movie star of the caliber of Hugh Grant to play one of them in a modern-day depiction of their flowery debauchery and high-toned base behaviors.
