An eighteen-year-old girl living in a backwater town harbors deep-seated resentment toward her mother in the emotional German short Siemensstadt (2000). Anke (Julia Hummer) remains haunted by her father’s suicide, which occurred when she was just a toddler. She’s long blamed her mother for his decision but never confronted her openly. But when mom (Ingeborg Westphal) decides to move in with a parish priest, it’s just the occasion that Anke needs to make a change in her own life. Felix Randau’s film is a mere fifteen minutes long, but he manages to capture both mother and daughter in moments of unguarded candor.
