Review
Poignant and tender without being maudlin, this delightful coming-of-age drama tells the story of a sensitive nine-year-old Parisian boy's experiences in the countryside after his mother leaves him with friends for the summer. The couple, a prissy but insolent woman and a rough and tumble drunkard, dote on the boy but incessantly argue as they are constantly reminded of their own child who tragically died a few years before. Rounding out the boy's education and introduction into the grown-up world is a rambunctious and wise-beyond-words tomboy. (American remake: Paradise) (French with English subtitles)
