A sheltered and sightless young man never realizes just how good he’s got it in Milton Katselas’s Oscar-winning romantic comedy Butterflies Are Free (1972). Edward Albert stars as the blind man who’s mother does her best to suffocate the poor lad out of concern for his well-being. Enter Goldie Hawn--the pert blonde falls madly in love with the mama’s boy and does her best to strip mom of her tyrannical influence. Katselas’s film is ostensibly a comedy, but it’s an honest-to-god tragedy to see a person spend all of his time in the company of an underwear-clad Goldie Hawn and not be able to fully enjoy it.
