A fan favorite at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, Spanking the Monkey (1994) provides queerly comic and psychodramatic views of a motherfucker’s muddled motives. The male hero (hero may not be quite the right word here) of Spanking is a struggling medical student confined by circumstances to endure an entire summer with his incapacitated mother. Mom’s leg is busted, but she summons enough mobility to break up sonny’s dalliance with a young high-school chick. Though hobbled, she also manages to get drunk and screw her son. In the aftermath of this bleakly fun loving, the humor of Spanking the Monkey is put to its toughest test.
