Being a hack writer who is on the wane after having never scaled any great artistic heights can fray a man’s nerves and drive him to seek all manner of ill-advised diversion. The aphasia-suffering wordsmith whose failings help create the winning Until the Night (2004) consoles himself by taking a second bite out of a romance from his past. That bygone bedmate is now married to an actor, formerly of some repute. Love, career, accomplishment, acclaim--all of these had seemed so important at one time. Now such dreams and ambitions are relegated to a shredded, dumped past. Still, every serial loser needs at least one more big defeat to look forward to.
