Review

The Swimmer (1968) plunges into the strange odyssey of Neddy Merrill (Burt Lancaster) as he goes from one end of his town to the other by jumping from backyard pool to backyard pool, having a series of bizarre and life-changing adventures along the way. Seventies cinema pioneer Sydney Pollack was an uncredited directed on this film (Frank Perry got all the directorial credit), which was based on a short story by John Cheever, and it prefigures the tragic heroes and allegorical narratives favored in some of Pollack’s later work, such as They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (1969). What they don’t shoot, though, are boobies, because Janet Landgard’s never come out of her little blue bikini.
