Peek into the mind of a madman in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Despair (1978). Dirk Bogarde stars as Hermann Hermann, a Russian expat who owns a chocolate factory in 1920s Germany. Hermann is slowly going mad, a tendency that first manifests itself when he steps outside of his body to observe himself making love with his free-spirited wife Lydia (Andréa Ferréol). When Hermann spots a man he believes to be his doppelganger on a business trip, he concocts a plot to fake his own death by killing the man- never mind that this “doppelganger” looks nothing like him.
