Revealed through flashbacks on a therapist’s couch, the German drama Der grosse Bagarozy (1999) tells the story of the devil’s involvement with the young opera singer Maria Callas. Deciding that the best way to shame God is to train Maria’s voice until it is about to reach a level of perfection that would reflect His own and then stifle it, the devil takes the form of a poodle who stays by Maria for her entire career but becomes too enchanted with her singing to stop her from reaching the pinnacle of her talent. The devil’s therapist (Corinna Harfouch) bares her grosse Bagarozies before she gets into bed with her shiftless husband. Devilish.
