Speed kills, but it also makes for a manic movie of frenzied highs and fast-approaching, screeching lows. Spun (2002) follows a methamphetamine dabbler (played as a baffled but quick post-adolescent by Jason Schwartzman) while he blasts off into the 24-hour party world of crank dealers, crank cookers and crank hookers. Pressed into service as an on-call delivery boy, Schwartzman falls under the seductive, speedy appeal of an underground chemist’s Las Vegas stripper girlfriend (the volatile, irresistible Brittany Murphy), becoming so rapt that he forgets he has a skinny, blonde trollop of his own tied up to the bed at home. Don’t expect things to suddenly start getting better, although that’s exactly what Schwartzman does expect.
