Into every futuristic dystopia a mite of nude sunshine must fall, and those bursts of radiant skin are why the direly prescient 1984 (1984) played through its initial release without resulting in audiences committing mass suicide. A bleak vision of a populace of cowering, malnourished, poverty-stricken drones held in the repressive vise of an impersonal, totalitarian government, this celluloid interpretation of George Orwell’s ode to the human spirit and its impending demise is rendered with reverence, chilling ambience, and a few fleeting moments of glorious freedom as experienced in Big Brother-defying, flesh-flaunting sexuality.
