Filmmaker Arthur Joffé's Harem (1985) brings terrifying—and secretly arousing—tales of white slavery to vivid life. Nastassja Kinski, at her mid-'80s hottest, stars as Diane, a naïve American who falls prey to predatory Arabian shiek Selim (Ben Kingsley, who's sort of playing the opposite of Gandhi). Diane lands in Selim's thirty-woman harem, but he takes a special liking to her and, in time, she comes to dig her rapist/captor as well. A romance that could only have been made in pre-politically-correct times, Harem is a hoot.
