In Pieces of April (2003), pretty prodigal daughter April (Katie Holmes) feels guilty for living far away from her critically ill mother (Patricia Clarkson), who's dying of cancer. As a gesture of familial unity, she invites all her uptight Connecticut kin to her Lower East Side apartment to reunite and meet her new African American boyfriend Bobby (Derek Luke) over Thanksgiving dinner. Enduring drama from a broken stove, she’s forced to co-mingle with the maligned tenants in her apartment to cook the turkey.
