Review

A naďve French teen experiences her first pangs of puppy love in the lyrical coming-of-age drama Faustine et le bel été (1972). Muriel Catalá stars as Faustine, a beautiful if immature youngster who retreats to her grandmother’s rural abode for the summer. There, she’s introduced to her neighbors--a pair of adult brothers, one married and the other divorced. Both have teenage sons who are enamored of the nubile Faustine, but the girl sets her sights on the divorced older man, a decision that sets her up for disappointment. Director Nina Companéez captures Catalá in scenes of desperation and longing, including a number of instances where she’s so eager for deflowering that she sheds her threads in anticipation.
