Review

A self-loathing gay producer (Campbell Scott) makes troubling demands on a struggling screenwriter (Peter Sarsgaard) in the intelligent and well-regarded indie drama The Dying Gaul (2005). Jeffrey (Scott) is willing to pay a pretty penny for the rights to Robert’s (Sarsgaard) script, but only if the writer changes the story into a romance between a man and a woman, instead of a man and a man. Jeffrey’s desire is driven by a sexual confusion that runs so deep that even his beautiful wife (Patricia Clarkson) knows nothing about it. Hell, the least the guy can do is release her back into the dating pool, where at least she’ll be appreciated. Clarkson’s never looked better than she does in the scene where her gay husband begrudgingly consents to a bit of between-the-sheets action.
